The wheel travels inside the link after #, which is never sent to our server.

Paste the names, choose how many teams (or how many people per team) and press Make teams.

    How the teams are made

The names are shuffled with a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by your browser’s cryptographic random generator, then dealt out one by one like cards. That is why team sizes never differ by more than one person, and why every possible split is equally likely.

Number of teams or team size

Choose Number of teams when you know how many groups you need (for example 4 tables). Choose People per team when the group size matters (for example pairs or trios); the generator works out how many teams that makes and spreads any leftovers.

Pick captains or who goes first

The wheel above uses the same names. Spin it to pick captains, a presenter or the first team. Add a second wheel (+ Add wheel) with tasks or topics and spin both together to give each person a job.

    Where people use it

PE and sports lessons, group projects, quiz nights, five-a-side games, workshop breakout rooms and game nights where you want teams nobody can argue about.

    Questions

How do I split a list into random teams?

Paste the names one per line, choose the number of teams or the team size, and press Make teams.

Can I choose the team size instead of the number of teams?

Yes. Pick “People per team” and type the size.

    Are the teams really random?

Yes. The list is shuffled with a cryptographic random generator and every split is equally likely.

What if the names do not divide evenly?

The extra people are spread across teams, so sizes differ by one at most.
